FORUM 2022: PROJECTS AND PROSPECTS

Minerals West Coast is excited to announce this year's forum date and venue have been confirmed, and registrations and ticket purchases are now open.

DATES AND LOCATION
This year's forum will be held on Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th of June at the Reefton Cinema & Theatre on Shiel Street.

Dinner and drinks will be held at nearby Dawson's Hotel on Broadway on the evening of the 29th of June.

The focus for the 2022 forum is Projects & Prospects, with a lineup reflecting the range of projects underway on the West Coast in either the exploration, development, operational, and closure stages across gold, coal, aggregate, and mineral sands.

TIMELINE OF EVENT
The doors will open for registrations from 12:30am for delegates to register on arrival. The forum itself will begin at 1:00pm, running through to 5:30pm on the 29th of June. 

Dinner and drinks will be held nearby at Dawson's Hotel and Restaurant, with an after dinner speech from mining engineer and author, Mark Bowater, following dinner.

The next morning, Thursday the 30th of June, the forum will resume at Reefton Cinema and theatre from 08:00am, running through to about half-past-twelve.

Francis Mining's Echo mine, in the Garvey Creek Coalfield, produces a low ash, semi-soft coking coal for specialist export markets. Echo mine manager, Eamon Moyhnihan will give an update on the mine's recent operations and future developments.

Rob Boyd, technical marketing manager for Bathurst Resources, will present recent studies evaluating whether shifting from coal to biomass for large energy users would lead to emissions reductions, and what implications that has for New Zealand's progress to a lower emissions energy sector.

Terra Firma, underground mining and tunneling contractor, is working to reopen Spring Creek coal mine near Greymouth, with a view to producing specialist coal for international silicon markets. The presentation will cover plans for reopening the former Solid Energy mine, and uses and markets for the specialist coal.

Richard Tacon, chief executive of Bathurst Resources, the company which owns and operates Stockton coal mine, New Zealand's largest opencast mine, will present on the company's recent operations and future projected development. Bathurst's operations include coal's produced for export into the Asia-Pacific for steel making, and for domestic consumption for large industrial energy users.

At the end of the first half of the forum on Wednesday afternoon, dinner and drinks will be held at Dawson's Hotel and Restaurant.

Minerals West Coast is proud to have arranged for mining engineer and author, Mark Bowater, to give an after dinner speech on his new book, Crimes Against Mine Planning. Mark's work is informed by decades working in the mining industry in Australia in mining engineering and management roles, and seeks to address what he sees as fundamental issues with mine planning. Mark Bowater has worked with over 50 mines in the past thirty years, and uses his experience to help mining operators get more value from their projects while saving time and money.

Westland Mineral Sands is working to establish an export industry in the mining of heavy mineral sands in the Buller District. Tom Ritchie is a geologist for Hardie Pacific, and will discuss the development of the project in the coming months as it works to establish its Westport operations and export services, as well as the geology of the mineral sands resource.

Pat Cooper, owner of Cooper's Drilling Services, has recently established a quarry at Jones Creek, between Westport and Granity. Pat will discuss the reasons for establishing the quarry - driven by demand for rock in the region - and the regulatory approvals navigated in the process, as well as the ongoing operations of the site.

Alton Drilling operates exploration projects in Coromandel, Otago, and on the West Coast. With high gold prices, and several new hard rock gold projects in exploration and development phases not just on the West Coast but around New Zealand, Fabian Harley will give an insight into the workings of exploration drilling.

Bernie Napp is director of Prospect Consulting, and will present on how all operators in the mining sector can stay ahead of changing regulations with sustainability reporting. This involves miners documenting what they are doing to address their environmental impact, and reporting on it. This information can answer any questions about the sustainability of an operation, and address the concerns of banks, iwi, communities, politicians, investors, and regulators.

As part of restoration and rehabilitation works at OceanaGold's Globe-Progress mine, which is now in the late stages of mine closure, OceanaGold is installing a passive water treatment system. This will ensure all water discharged from the former mine site into local waterways is of an acceptable quality, and is a key step in the closure of the site.

Paparoa Wildlife Trust
Paul Berry, chairperson of the Paparoa Wildlife Trust, will speak to the work the organisation has carried out since its beginnings in 2006. The trust is working to establish a forest habitat able to host self sustaining populations of native species like kiwi and whio by reducing their exposure to introduced pests over 3,600 hectares of the Roaring Meg Ecological Area. The Paparoa Wildlife Trust's supporters include Roa Mining, Kiwis for kiwi, the World Wildlife Foundation, and the Department of Conservation.

The inclusion of quarries and alluvial goldmines in the the Health and Safety at Work Act's mining and quarrying regulations means miners at all levels of the industry will have to comply with rules that previously did not apply. Dave Bellett, WorkSafe's deputy chief inspector, will explain what these changes mean for mine owners and managers, and their legal obligations under the regulations.

Rachel Fifield works as a socio-economic development officer for Buller District Council, and Kit Wilson as senior communications advisor for OceanaGold. The two will discuss
the community aspects of mine closure following the 2016 closure of OceanaGold’s Globe Progress mine at Reefton.
